Udawalawe Reservoir & Dam

Udawalawe Reservoir can be named as, one of the most important resources in Sri Lanka. This valuable construction is situated within Udawalawe National Park. Udawalawe reservoir consist of a dam and a hydro power station. The Udawalawe dam is used to produce hydro electric power and this irrigation dam is situated in the Southern province of Sri Lanka. When consider about the magnitude of the Udawalawe reservoir, it measures approximately, 267 MCM as the total capacity and 8.6 Km as the maximum length and 7 Km as its maximum width. Udawalawe reservoir built across the Walawe River. It means that, this was created by constructing the Udawalawe dam in order to impound the water from the walawe River. There are five tainter gates and these five tainter gates at the eastern end of this dam and the extra spillways found in the centre of the dam helps to control the water level of

the reservoir. Several usages which can be taken from this construction are listed below:

Provides irrigation facilities for human habitats.
Provides irrigation facilities for cultivation.
Supply a valuable amount of power to the national power grid through the hydro power station of the reservoir.
Provides a natural beauty which attract tourist attraction to the country.
